Frequently Asked Questions

How is Protandim different from other antioxidant supplements?
Instead of providing the body with additional dietary antioxidants (regular supplements fall into this category and are commonly called consumable antioxidants), Protandim works from within your body- signaling it to boost its own production of two key antioxidant enzymes that already exist at the cellular level to help fight free radicals and cellular aging. This is why Protandim is significantly more effective than any other antioxidant on the market today – your body is actually producing the antioxidant power.
Can I buy the five ingredients separately and incorporate them into my
diet?
Protandim is made up of extracts of its five main ingredients in order to concentrate the positive effects. Purchasing the ingredients separately — like milk thistle, green tea, etc. — is not the same as taking Protandim because you won’t be able to isolate the extracted material. In addition, the synergy of the ingredients, as combined in the patented Protandim formula, are demonstrated to be many times more effective than the ingredients individually.
I take Vitamin C and E, why should I also take Protandim?
Vitamins C and E can provide your body with important nutrients. However, when it comes to cellular health and Oxidative Stress, reasonable quantities of these supplements may not provide you with enough of the antioxidant benefits your body needs. Does Protandim reverse the effects of aging? Is it a “fountain of youth” pill or will it allow me to live longer and “cheat death”?
Protandim is not sold as a “fountain of youth pill.” The aging process, and cellular aging in particular, has a significant relationship to Oxidative Stress, and Protandim has been shown to reduce Oxidative Stress and slow the rate of cell aging in a human clinical study.
Should I continue to take my other vitamins and antioxidants?
Many western diets are lacking in certain nutritional elements, so multivitamin supplementation is still beneficial for most people. You can discontinue supplementing with antioxidants, however, because Protandim is more effective at eliminating free radical damage than supplementation with conventional antioxidants.
Is one study enough to claim the benefits of Protandim? Shouldn’t more studies that confirm the first study’s findings be completed?
For statistically significant results, one study is sufficient in the case of Protandim. When clinical studies are conducted, researchers are required to conduct a ‘power analysis’ to determine the minimum number of patients required to show the effectiveness of a drug treatment or intervention. For Protandim, a power analysis was conducted to determine the sample size for a human study. The result of the power analysis for Protandim showed that a human study including at least 13 patients would give statistically significant results.

While the Protandim clinical study with 29 patients is sufficient to demonstrate the effectiveness from a scientific perspective, additional studies are underway to validate the initial results as well as provide additional backing for the product in the minds of consumers.

Since these FAQs were written and posted, there are 4 studies that have been completed, peer-reviewed and published in medical journals.  The most recent having been published in the journal of the American Heart Association; Circulation.

What claims can be made about Protandim?

First, let me be absolutely clear.  Protandim does not treat, prevent or cure any disease.  What it does is reduce your Oxidative Stress.  Initially, after 30 days, it reduces your Oxidative Stress by an average of 40%.  It continues to reduce your Oxidative Stress the longer you take it.  However, Oxidative Stress is linked to a lot of degenerative conditions.  Have you seen the abstract in the University of Ohio study regarding Oxidative Stress & Alzheimer’s disease?  Wow.
It works for everyone the same way.  As long as you’re a mammal.  The studies regarding SOD with worms and flies are irrelevant when it comes to discussions about Protandim.  Protandim is a mammalian formulation.  We are not particularly concerned with extending the healthspan or lifespan of worms and flies.  It works well on mammalian pets (dogs, cats, etc)

Are there any drug interactions with Protandim

There are no drug interactions with Protandim, however it does make Coumadin work more effectively.  So, if you’re taking Protandim while on Coumadin, be sure to make your doctor aware of it so they can modify your dosage of Coumadin.
The reason that there is no interaction is because our bodies process pharmaceuticals through our kidneys and Protandim is process through our liver.  There are no side effects to Protandim.  There are definite health benefits from taking Protandim and reducing your Oxidative Stress.  The benefits are different for everyone.

Can you be allergic to Protandim?

Of course you can.  Just as you can be allergic to any food or plant extract.  If you find that after taking Protandim you have allergic like reactions, reduce the dosage depending on severity of the reaction.  If the reaction is too bad, discontinue using Protandim.  To date, the most severe reactions have been cases of heartburn and gas.  Those cases were alleviated by reducing their dosage to one-half of a pill, taken either once or twice a day.
